A dripping joint usually means the seal has dried out or the gutter has moved. Early on, resealing is a quick fix. If the metal is corroded, the plastic cracked or the run has dropped, the section needs replacing. Look at the joint in rain to confirm it is the source.
Confirm the source
Watch the joint in rain. A drip from the underside of the joint is a leak. Water over the front further along is overflow, a different problem. Staining under the joint on the wall tells you it has been dripping for a while.
Reseal
Where the parts are sound but the seal has failed, resealing is enough. It is a quick job done in dry weather on a clean, dry joint.
Replace
- Cast iron with deep rust or a cracked joint flange.
- Plastic that is brittle, split or discoloured.
- A run that has dropped because of rotten timber behind it.

Common questions
How long does a reseal last?
It depends on the condition of the parts and the exposure of the wall, but a sound joint can last years.
Can I seal over rust?
Not reliably. Rust under the sealant will keep working, so the surface should be prepared first.
