Cast iron or uPVC gutters: which is right?

Short answer

Cast iron lasts for generations and suits period homes but needs regular painting and care. uPVC costs less, never rusts and needs little upkeep, but can sag and discolour. The better choice depends on the age of the house, planning limits and how much upkeep you want to do.

Cast iron

Cast iron suits Victorian and Edwardian homes and often matches the original look. It is heavy and strong, and with regular painting it can last a very long time. Left unpainted it rusts, particularly at joints and in salty air. Individual sections can often be repaired or replaced rather than the whole run.

uPVC

uPVC is light, does not rust and needs only an occasional clean. It can bow if brackets are spaced too far apart, and white finishes may yellow or pick up algae. Brackets and seals still age, so joints should be checked.

Which to pick

  • Listed buildings and conservation areas may have rules about materials, so check before changing.
  • Older terraces often look best with a like-for-like replacement.
  • For a modern semi, uPVC is usually the practical option.

Common questions

Can I replace one section of cast iron?

Often yes, if a matching profile is available.

Does uPVC suit a Victorian terrace?

Sometimes, but it may look out of place or be restricted in a conservation area.
